I've been thinking about the things I do "just for fun."
They walk the line between two categories we all know well.
I've been thinking about the things I do "just for fun."
They walk the line between two categories we all know well.
There's "this is good for me." Working out, taking supplements, going to sleep early.
And there's "this is fun but it's actually bad for me." Scrolling too much, eating cookies like I'm the Cookie Monster, drinking alcohol.
This summer, just for fun has looked like reading YA fiction, lots of lunches with friends, and dreaming about my next trip.
On a soul level, that's good for me. Just not in that calculating, over-optimized way.
There's a lot of pressure to over-optimize every facet of our lives. To be a quasi-expert in health, nutrition, fitness, finances, technology, emotions, relationships.
It can feel suffocating!
That's why I think it's important to have this third category in my life. It's not "good" for me. It's not "bad" for me. I just like it.
Is there anything you do "just for fun" that's neither good for you nor bad for you?
If nothing comes to mind, that's worth noticing too. It might be a good question to bring into your next mid-year reflection.
Not everything in my life has to earn its place. Some things get to stay simply because I like them.
